Jefferson Franklin – proud to help LGBTQIA writers raise their voices.

At Jefferson Franklin, we believe in equality of rights, equality of opportunity, and equality of pleasure. That’s why, as Pride London comes to an end, we’re launching our 2017 LGBTQIA Edit Giveaway.

We believe in equality all along the gender spectrum, the sexuality spectrum, and the ability spectrum.

We believe in honouring those who have fought for equality in our society, and celebrating progress and social diversity. But we live in a world where the idea of equality is under threat, so Jefferson Franklin believes it is also important to raise the voices of LGBTQIA people, and especially LGBTQIA writers. Progress cannot be allowed to be eroded – it’s been won at too high a cost over too many years.

That’s why we’re offering free and discounted edits to writers who advance LGBTQIA equality – to help get more LGBTQIA stories into the hands of readers.

The What, When And How

Between Saturday 9th July (the end of Pride London) and 27th August (the end of Pride Cymru in Wales), we’ll be accepting chapters as normal for our free sample chapter edits. These can be up to 10,000 words, submitted by email as a Word document or equivalent to enquiries@jefferson-franklin.co.uk. Don’t submit through this website, use your usual email program and drop us a line. You’ll get a free sample edit and critique of your work, usually returned within seven days (though a little latitude may be needed at times of high demand). We do this all year round in any case, BUT if you put ‘Pride’ in the header of your email, we’ll enter you into the LGBTQIA Edit Giveaway. After 27th August, we’ll be picking one writer to get an entirely free full edit and critique on their manuscript.

Three other contenders will be offered full edits at a 50% discount on our normal price. And all those who send us a ‘Pride’ sample before the end of 27th August will be eligible for a 15% discount.

No Restrictions, No Categories

We’re not about to tell you what to write, and there are no restrictions or categories. By all means, send us the next great campaigning LGBTQIA novel if you’ve written it, but we’re interested in everything. From family sagas to domestic dramas, from general fiction to erotic adventuring, from Young Adult coming-of-age stories to sci-fi epics or the next Game of Thrones, if it advances LGBTQIA equality, or is written by an LGBTQIA author, we want to read it.

Pride of course is a worldwide event, and the giveaway is open to authors from around the globe – we chose the period between London Pride and Pride Cymru as our submission window simply to focus the minds of writers everywhere.

Send us your sample chapters now, get a free edit on them, and who knows – maybe you’ll win the first Jefferson Franklin LGBTQIA Edit Giveaway.

Free Sample Chapter Edits

Written by Tony Fyler on . Posted in General, News, Services

SurpriseWe’ve recently had a  number of authors approach us, incredulous that we offer free sample chapter edits.

So many in fact, it seemed worth putting together a Frequently Asked Questions list, to help authors understand how it works.

1.  Yes, they’re completely free.

2.  Yes, they’re completely without obligation – you can take our sample chapter edits and never speak to us again if you like.

3.  This is how they work. You email us at enquiries@jefferson-franklin.co.uk, attaching your sample chapter (ideally your first chapter) as a Word document. (No, there’s no facility to upload your chapters directly on this website). We acknowledge receipt of your work, and, usually within seven days, we’ll send you back an edited version of your work (using Track Changes, so you can see what we’ve done), a “clean” version of the edit, with all the edits accepted and all the comments removed, and a critique document on the chapter. That’s it. If you don’t want to use us based on what we send you, we’ll wish you well with your writing. If you do want to use us, we talk deadlines and prices.

4.  This is not a limited-time offer. Free sample chapter edits are a fundamental part of the Jefferson Franklin business model.
One free sample edit per author.

5.  We do this because we’re not an average editing house. We believe no author should commit hard-earned cash to an editor without being confident they’re getting a professional service which is right for them.

So no, you have nothing to lose by sending us your sample chapter. Why wait? Email us your chapter today and find out if Jefferson Franklin is right for you.

GB Williams Lands Three-Book Deal

Written by Tony Fyler on . Posted in News

GB Williams – she’s going to lock you in for three books.

We’re going to be smug now.

Intolerably, irredeemably smug. In fact, we’re going to dance around the internet doing the ‘We Told you So’ dance.

GB Williams, one of our longest-serving editors, just signed a three-book deal with Bloodhound Books.

We first encountered GB Williams as a client here at Jefferson Franklin, and we were impressed right from the word ‘Go.’ Besides crafting ingenious plots with simmering tensions between her characters, GB proved to have other oseful skills, and now, barring the Editor-in-Chief, she’s our longest-serving Senior Editor. A whizz at research-led realism, believable timelines, involving worlds, complex plotting and characters you’ll recognise as real human beings, rather than walking plot-engines, GB Williams is a writer you’ll want to read – and then an author you’ll want to read more.

The ‘Locked’ series is set to shake up the contemporary crime market from Autumn 2017, when the first of the three books is launched.

GB Williams, folks – you’re going to want to lock yourself in with her books. Check her out at Bloodhound Books here.

What’s more, GB has since also begun negotiations with Xchyler Publishing in the US to publish the first novel in a steampunk adventure series, Shades of Aether, following the exploits of Amethyst Forrester as she becomes an heiress, moves into high society, and ends up saving the British establishment with the cunning application of marzipan. Xchyler knows a good writer when it sees one, and has previously published GB in a steampunk anthology, Steel And bone.

So whether you like your crime gritty, realistic and modern, or Victorian and steampunk, you’re going to want to check out GB Williams this autumn – whichever side of the Atlantic you’re on, she’s going to take your world by storm.

Editor-in-Chief Writes Doctor Who

What the Editor-in-Chief does between edits – Doctor Who: Purification

Our Editor-in-Chief, Tony Fyler, is a Doctor Who fanatic. So when he got the opportunity to write a 40-minute audio adventure for an ‘unbound’ or ‘unofficial’ Doctor, he jumped at the chance.

The result is Doctor Who: Purification, from On Fleak Productions, which is out today.

In the story, the recently-regenerated Doctor arrives in Hitler’s bunker in the last days of the War, just in time to discover the Fuhrer has one final trick up his sleeves. A trick that could turn the tide of the conflict and change the destiny of the planet.

On Fleak Productions is not affiliated in any way with the BBC, and its audio adventures are entirely unofficial – which means they’re also entirely free to download. Check out Doctor Who: Purification today.
